Lisbon giants Benfica won the Portuguese League Cup on Wednesday with a 2-0 victory over Rio Ave, just days after winning a record 33rd domestic league title.

Brazilian-born, Spanish striker Rodrigo struck four minutes before half-time before captain Luisao added some late insurance, as the Europa League finalists secured their fifth League Cup success.

After the heartbreaking disappointment of last season when they finished runners-up in the league, the Cup and the Europa League, coach Jorge Jesus has guided the club to the brink of what could yet be four trophies.

They will again play Rio Ave in the Portuguese Cup final on May 18, four days after taking on Spanish side Sevilla in the Europa League final in Turin.

Northern-based club Rio Ave are guaranteed a place in the Europa League next season, the first time they will take part in a European competition, as Benfica are already assured Champions League football.
