Kompany fitness boost for Belgium

Belgium captain Vincent Kompany has shrugged off a groin injury and will be ready to face Argentina in Saturday's World Cup quarter-final, coach Marc Wilmots has said.

The Manchester City centre-back, 28, missed Belgium's final group game against South Korea and was unable to train before playing in their 2-1 extra-time win over the United States on Tuesday.

After watching Kompany get through the last-16 tie at Salvador's Arena Fonte Nova unscathed, Belgium boss Wilmots is confident he will feature against Argentina in Brasilia.

Quoted in the Daily Mail, he said: "He looks to have made a very good recovery."

Fellow defender Thomas Vermaelen missed the encounter with the US but is back in contention following a hamstring injury while Jan Vertonghen and Toby Alderweireld are struggling with niggles.

"That stands to reason after the exertions against the US," Wilmots added. "But our medical staff have done an outstanding job and will sort it out."
