May 12th 2009 The England Beach Soccer Squad met for its first training session on the weekend of April 25/26th at Butlins in Minehead. This was the first of four get together's before the team go off to the World Cup Qualifiers in Castellon in Spain on June 7th - 14th. Butlins has been a great venue for our training so far, as it gives the squad the opportunity to mix off the sand as well as on it. The sand sports facility there, although a little small, is ideal as it is enclosed and we have the benefit of pro goals in place on site. As its a good 3-4 hour drive for most people to Butlins, the squad arrived on the Saturday night and after a good nights sleep and some breakfast we were out on the sand for 10 am, and although it was a bit wet for the majority of the time it gave us a nice long day of practice. The group of players I have assembled have bonded so well in such a short time, which speaks volumes for the personalities of the lads, and in time this will be an invaluable benefit to us in competition. I pin pointed 3 areas that I felt we needed to work on as a team for this first session. Defensive shape, finishing and set plays. The players responded well and this was evident in the game at the end of the day when they were putting into practice some of the moves we had worked on and getting success from them. It was great to have Chris Attwood back involved with the England squad after a few years away, his experience will be a huge plus for us. Added to this the new players to the game have settled well and are really enthusiastic towards the sport and I think they are going to impress even more as they get more experience. The squads next training session will be held on Appley Beach in Ryde on The Isle of Wight on Sunday 10th May and this will include a practice game at 2pm. Jamie O'Rourke.
