England Squad Training Update - IOW, May 10th

In our penultamate training session before we travel to Castellon in Spain for the FIFA World Cup Qualifiers, the England Squad met on the sands of Appley Beach in Ryde on The Isle of Wight, the home of Beach Soccer in England. Our training facilities at Butlins in Minehead are great but I felt it was important for the squad to have a day's training on the beach to really get a feel for the essence of the sport. Despite the windy conditions we once again managed to have a quality training session, working on keeping possession through movement and player rotation and also we worked on our set plays that I introduced at the last Butlins get together. We were very grateful to EBS Head of Developement Luke Kerr for organising an Isle of Wight select team, which included many players with international experience, to play us in a practice match as part of our training. This game was of great benefit to me and the players as we look to prepare for the Qualifiers which are now only three and a half weeks away. We managed to win the game 4-1 with goals from GC Giancovich(2), Gary Funnell and Dean Blake. The Islanders goal came from Ricky Sprooles. I'd also like to thank the referees for giving up their time on a Sunday afternoon to come down and officiate the game. It was great to see GC involved with the Squad for the first time this year. His work committments have mean't he hasn't been able to attend any of the sessions so far, but he certainly showed his class both during training and in the game. Our next training session is on the 24th May at Butlins in Minehead and this will be our final meeting before we fly to Spain, the team for which will be annonced on the website very soon. Jamie O'Rourke.
