Van Gaal explains short break
22 Jun 2010 - 16:39:35
Bayern Munich coach Louis van Gaal has rejected suggestions that last season's double-winning side should have been awarded more of a summer break.
Van Gaal welcomed 27 players back to pre-season training in Munich on Monday less than five weeks after their final game of the last season.
Bayern lost 2-0 to Internazionale in the Champions League final in Madrid on May 22 but every first-team player, minus those on World Cup duty, all reported back to the club's training base on Monday.
Van Gaal will put his players through their paces for two weeks before a 10-day break ahead of a series of pre-season matches.
"I don't think players need more than four or five weeks holiday at a time," explained the Dutch coach.
"We've had four and a half weeks to recover from last season.
"Now the players such as Ivica Olic and Daniel Pranjic who aren't at the World Cup need to start training again."
