Toni's Bayern days numbered

Bayern Munich striker Luca Toni has been told by manager Louis van Gaal that he is not part of his plans after falling foul of the club's expectations.

The Bundesliga giants seem to have turned their season around in recent weeks after a disappointing start to the campaign.

Their excellent 4-1 success at Juventus helped them to qualify from the Champions League group stage and they have now won their last five games in all competitions following an excellent 5-1 hammering of Bochum on Saturday.

Van Gaal said: "We have rules and we have to work within these rules. Luca Toni did not stick to the rules. He had to fight for his place along with (Ivica) Olic and (Mario) Gomez.

"Every player, whether they are a world champion or whatever, has got to accept that he doesn't play."
