Toni back in the Bayern fold

    14 Oct 2009 - 08:22:05

Bayern Munich boss Louis van Gaal has hinted that Luca Toni will make his first Bundesliga appearance of the season in this weekend's game against Freiburg.

The Italy international is expected to start as Bayern are currently plagued by injury worries with Ivica Olic, Arjen Robben and Franck Ribery all currently sidelined.

"I've supervised training with Luca Toni and Mark van Bommel in the last few days, and I think they're both nearly ready, especially Luca Toni," van Gaal told the club's official website.

"He's an exceptional footballer who's scored a lot of goals in recent seasons. We're delighted we'll soon have another weapon up front."

Earlier in the week chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge had talked up Toni who had been linked with a return to Serie A after slipping down the pecking order at the Bundesliga club.

Rummenigge had said of the former Fiorentina striker: "Toni's future is at Bayern Munich 100 per cent. After his injury he's been training under van Gaal and he's left a very good impression.

"Soon he will be re-integrated into our squad and he will be a fundamental player for us."
