Schweinsteiger set for bench in Bayerns opener
Germany midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger is set to start on the bench for Bayern Munich's opening league game of the season at Bundesliga new boys Guerther Fuerth on Saturday.
The Germany star picked up a foot injury in a pre-season game on August 4, but came off the bench for the last 15 minutes of Bayern's 4-0 win over minnows Jahn Regensburg in the first round of the German Cup on Monday.
Despite having played for Germany during June's European Championship, Schweinsteiger has laboured with ankle problems since he was injured in February.
Bayern's director of sport, Matthias Sammer, has said he will give the 28-year-old plenty of time to recover, meaning that Schweinsteiger looks set to start on the bench on Saturday.
"Bastian is on a great path. He has trained very well, but he needs to work hard," said Sammer. "We are not under pressure and I don't think that we should put pressure on him. We must give Bastian time.
"I believe that Bastian has confidence in his foot and body, but after a long break, the body needs the opportunity to make up for lost fitness."
Schweinsteiger said he was feeling good, but needs to train hard.
"It's getting better every day and the foot also feels better," he said.
"You've got to train in peace -- and that's what's happening now."
