Rummenigge eyes special treble
13 May 2010 - 15:54:25
Bayern Munich chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge believes that if his side can win the DFB-Pokal on Saturday and the Champions League on May 22 then it would surpass the achievements of the great side of the 1970s.
Rummenigge, who was part of the Bayern team that won three European Cup titles in their heyday, thinks a historic treble would cap an excellent season under Louis van Gaal.
With the Bundesliga title already secured, just Werder Bremen stand in their way of another German domestic crown while they face Italian side Internazionale in the Champions League final later this month.
Speaking to eurosport.de, Rummenigge said: "For the whole club, it would be a historic event. Even the great team from the 70s, who won the European Cup three times, never managed the treble.
"But regardless of that, we have got to say that the current team has played a remarkable season and we have the chance to put the cherry on the top. We have got to think in small steps and the first step is to win the DFB-Pokal.
"That is going to be hard enough, but I think we have a decent chance. Werder will want to win it as much as we do."
