Lahm unsure of what position to take

Germany captain Philipp Lahm has said that while he enjoys switching between right-back and the defensive midfield position, he wants to settle on one role before the 2014 World Cup.

Bayern Munich coach Pep Guardiola has largely used the 29-year-old as a number six, a lone defensive midfielder playing in front of the back four, this season for the Bundesliga champions.

National coach Joachim Loew also carried on the trend by deploying Lahm in that role for last month's 5-3 World Cup qualifier win against Sweden in Stockholm.

Guardiola fielded Lahm as a number six in Bayern's 1-0 win at Viktoria Pilsen on Tuesday which confirmed Munich's place in the Champions League's knock-out phase.

While Lahm has said he has no problem switching, he wants to go into next June's Brazil World Cup in one position.

"There is an option for Jogi Loew to let me run out as a number six," Lahm told magazine Sport Bild.

"We will certainly talk about it, but in the tournament, there should be no surprises or spontaneous changes of position."

Lahm said that players are not always happy "changing from match to match. You have to adapt to a position", but says he feels comfortable playing in midfield.

"It gives me a lot of fun, but I have no preferred position," he said.

"I'll only say that as a wing-back, I am better on the right than on the left."

Lahm is under contract with European champions Bayern Munich until 2016 and has said he sees no reason to leave the Bavarian giants, who are bidding to reach a fourth Champions League final in five years this season.
