    Lahm to captain Germany

    18 Nov 2009 - 07:01:46

Bayern Munich full-back Philipp Lahm is expected to skipper the national side against Ivory Coast on Wednesday following Michael Ballack's withdrawal through injury.

The 26-year-old is set to pick up his 63rd cap and, in his role as vice-captain, he should be promoted in the Chelsea star's absence.

With Germany heading to South Africa for next year's World Cup finals, Lahm insists it has been a good year but he wants the good form to continue.

Speaking at a press conference on Tuesday, Lahm said: "It's been a positive year, we achieved qualification for the 2010 World Cup which we set out to do.

"We know we have to improve, but we achieved out targets for this year and we need a win to finish off the year."

Lahm himself has been subject to disciplinary problems at Bayern recently after he criticised the club's transfer policy and their alleged lack of drive.

He was subsequently fined a record amount by the Bavarian club for his outburst.
