Bayern Munich's Argentina central defender Martin Demichelis is seeking to leave the club after being left out of the side for the Bundesliga season-opener against Wolfsburg.
The 29-year-old missed out on a place in Louis van gaal's 18-man squad and was far from happy with that situation.
He told Bild: "The truth is that a cycle is coming to an end and it's better for both parties if we go our separate ways.
"I don't think it's fair to remain with the club if all signs point to a separation."
Dutch coach van Gaal added: "I made my decision and the player must accept it.
"He won the title with us last season, but now he has been replaced and he must accept that, even though it's not easy."
Meanwhile, new Wolves head coach Steve McClaren was downbeat after seeing his side a last-minute goal in the 2-1 reverse at Byaern, telling his club's official website: "That was the worst possible way to lose and for us it is a big disappointment.
"We came back in the second half by putting a lot of passion into the game. In the first half we gave them too much respect. It's a good lesson for us, but a painful one."
