Bayern boss warns against euphoria after City win

Bayern Munich boss Karl-Heinz Rummenigge on Wednesday warned against the euphoria sweeping the German giants after their impressive win over Manchester City in the Champions League.

Bayern striker Mario Gomez scored twice in their 2-0 victory over Premier League side City on Tuesday in Munich which gave the hosts their second straight win in Europe and leaves them two points clear at the top of Group A.

Munich's Allianz Arena will host the Champions League final on May 19, but Rummenigge has warned against any day-dreaming of Munich lifting European football's top domestic title for the first time since 2001.

"The Champions League doesn't really get going until the knock-out stages and the title will be won in May, not in September," said Rummenigge, Bayern's Chief Executive Officer.

"So let's keep our feet on the ground. We need to take this step-by-step."

But there was no stopping captain Philipp Lahm who suggested the German league title is as good as won, with only seven games played and more than seven months still left to play.

"If we maintain our form, it's clear no one can threaten us for the Bundesliga championship," Lahm boasted with his team two points clear at the top of the Bundesliga.

"Only we can stop ourselves, but it's different in the Champions League.

"Teams like Barcelona, Real Madrid and Manchester United, they are the teams we need to beat."

After Bayern failed to win any silverware last season, Gomez, who has netted 11 goals in his last seven games, says there is plenty of space in the trophy cabinet.

"Last year, we didn't win anything, we need to get some trophies again this year," he said.

"We're on the right track, but we haven't won anything yet."

Bayern are next away to Napoli in Group A on October 18, the same night City host Spain's Villarreal in the next round of Champions League games.
