Bayern boss considering Lahm as midfield option

Bayern Munich coach Jupp Heynckes has admitted he is considering switching star defender Philipp Lahm into the middle against Werder Bremen on Saturday to help solve Bayern's defensive midfield problems.

Bayern have lost their last two German league games, both at home to defending champions Borussia Dortmund and away to strugglers Mainz, and have dropped to third in the table with Bremen in fourth.

The Bavarian giants have struggle to cover for the loss of injured midfield play-maker Bastian Schweinsteiger, who broke his collarbone at the start of November.

Ukraine star Anatoliy Tymoshchuk is suspended for the visit of Bremen, having been sent off in the narrow win at bottom side Augsburg, and Heynckes says Bayern captain Lahm is one of his options to move into the midfield.

"We have spent the last two days working intensively on our tactics," said Heynckes, who said midfielder Toni Kroos is set to start despite suffering with a cold.

"We have tried various options in the event that something unexpected happens and Lahm is one of them."

It has been nearly 14 years since Bayern lost three Bundesliga games in succession.

Heynckes is calling for a big effort from his players to try to get back on top of the table as they trail both leaders Dortmund and second-placed Moenchengladbach by a point.

"We need to change something, we must turn the screw and be passionate," he said.
