Top Five - Arjen Robben Goals

21 April 2010 14:31
Robbie Blakeley picks five of the best from Arjen Robben's goals collection, including the belter that sent Manchester United crashing out of the Champions League at Old Trafford.

5. vs Blackburn, March 2005

A goal that set Chelsea and Jose Mourinho on their way to a first Premiership title. Breaking away from a Blackburn corner, Robben races onto a through ball and wrong foots the defender before releasing a bullet of a shot across Rovers keeper Brad Friedel into the bottom corner of the net.

4. vs Fiorentina, March 2010

Five years on and that left foot shows no signs of letting up. With Bayern trailing on their way out of the Champions League, Robben picks up the ball on the right hand side of the pitch, before cutting inside, beating a challenge and launching the ball into the very top corner.

3. vs France, Euro 2008

It's not every day William Gallas is made to look like Titus Bramble, but Robben managed it. Teasing the imposing French centre back with his flashy footwork, it looked at one point if he had dribbled the ball too far. But from an acute angle, he brilliantly lifted the ball over keeper Coupet into the one bit of the goal he had to aim at.

2. vs Villarreal, February 2009

Almost identical to the Fiorentina goal, but higher up the list as he had to beat three opposition players. He picked up the ball deeper up the pitch on the right, before dribbling 20 yards, cutting inside the Villarreal defence and unleashing another 25 yard corker.

1. vs Man Utd, March 2010

Still fresh in the memory and it will be for years to come. Bayern had been trailing the game 3-0, but had pulled a goal back through Ivica Olic. They still needed one more, when Franck Ribery's corner was met in the 74th minute by one of the crispest first time volleys you are likely to see. The ball shot past the despairing Michael Carrick and beyond Edwin van der Sar into the bottom corner. Advantage Bayern. Lyon, beware the Wing King.
