Robert Lewandowski: The free gamble

26 April 2014 09:12

Robert Lewandoski officially announced that he would be joining Bayern Munich when his contract at Borussia Dortmund ends this summer thus meaning that he would be leaving as a free agent. This is definitely a big blow to Borussia Dortmund and all the other elites clubs that were chasing the signature of one of the most coveted striker in Europe. Bayern Munich still has a very good chance to become the first team to defend a treble since Europe’s premier competition was changed and therefore adding a striker of Lewy’s quality to their team would almost if not totally make them unstoppable and this move really seems like a befitting reward for the striker’s continuous hard work and consistency for Der BVB (The BVB).Over the past few years, Borussia Dortmund has had to deal with loss of integral players so this feat comes as nothing new to them but those players who flourished at the ever buzzing Signal Iduna Park had always found it difficult to thrive elsewhere.

Players such as Nuri Sahin, Shingi Kagawa and even to some extent Mario Gotze have all failed to live up to the name they made for themselves as stars of Dortmund. Sahin left Dortmund for Real Madrid after leading them to a Bundesliga title as well as being named Bundesliga player of the year for that season but unfortunately for him he was unable to replicate any type of form he showed at Dortmund and even though injury played its part, whenever Sahin was on the pitch for Madrid he never looked like the player that just won his team the title under the nose of the mighty Bayern Munich and subsequently he was shipped off to Liverpool, where he was supposed to have a fresh start but it was same old story and his Liverpool career ended before it even started before he finally returned home, where it all started initially on a loan deal but now that deal has been made permanent and the way Sahin is now playing you keep wondering why he flopped at two of the biggest clubs in the world. On the other hand Shingi Kagawa on the back of a domestic double, left the Ruhr based club to join a Manchester United team that really lacked creativity in their midfield and based on his performances at Dortmund he was no doubt the man to solve their problem and even though there has been some flashes of brilliance, just like Sahin he also failed to deliver and there has been rumors circulating that Jurgen Klopp is planning to launch a bid for the player that was a fan-favorite at the Signal Iduna Park. Of the star players that has left this mesmerizing team, Mario Gotze is the only one who could be said to has done something noteworthy for his new club but let’s not get too carried away, Gotze is nowhere near his true potential at Bayern Munich nor has he been able to reach the heights he reached at the Die Schwarzgelben.

Robert Lewandoski’s move to the historic Allianz Arena seems like a match made in heaven but the Bavarians faithful should not get their hopes high because this is another player from an excellent football unit which has no true stars or stand-out player, a soccer system that makes all their squad members look flawless with their breathing taking piece of attacking football .Time would surely tell if Lewandoski, a player who truly cemented his status as one of Europe’s top predator by single-handedly destroying and terrorizing Real Madrid with 4 goals in the first leg of a champion’s league semi finals, is going to be another of those Dortmund stars who can’t survive outside of the Westfalenstadion or if he would cement he would cement his name forever in history books with performances even better than that of his Borussia Dortmund days. Only time would tell.
