Bayern star Breno to be prosecuted over house fire

German prosecutors on Wednesday said they were to take action against Bayern Munich's Brazilian star Breno for allegedly setting fire to his own house last year.

"The public prosecutor's office in Munich has ended its investigation into the fire on September 20, 2011," it said in a statement, adding that it would "prosecute" Breno on charges of starting the blaze himself.

If found guilty, the 22-year-old defender could be jailed for a minimum of one year and a maximum of 15, prosecutors added.

Breno -- full name Breno Vinicius Rodrigues Borges -- has already spent two weeks in custody before being released on bail last October.

According to prosecutors, he was the only one in the luxury house in the Gruenewald superb of Munich at the time of the fire, which caused damage worth an estimated one million euros ($1.3 million, £825,000).

They alleged that Breno was drunk and "probably" used "lighters and inflammable liquids and set fire... to several parts of the building".

Breno escaped the fire with slight smoke inhalation but was otherwise uninjured. His wife, their son and two other children from his previous relationship were not at the house at the time.

German media said that he had seen a doctor at a psychiatric clinic at the request of his club the day before he was questioned about the fire.

Breno underwent knee surgery on February 10 and has yet to make an appearance for Bayern this season having joined the Bavarian giants in 2008.
