Barnsley failed with a deadline day move to sign Port Vale's in-form striker Leon Constantine.
Constantine, 28, has started the new season in fine style, netting six goals in six games for the Valiants.
Tykes chairman Gordon Shepherd told the Sheffield Star: "We made an enquiry about Leon Constantine, but they didn't want to sell him because he has scored six goals in six games.
"There is a slight disappointment that no-one has come in, but you have to be careful when you buy players."
The Tykes are also reported to have missed out on Carlisle United striker Michael Bridges, who chose to join Hull City.
