Barnsley hope to have striker Iain Hume back in competitive action for the start of next season.
The Canada international has been out of action since fracturing his skull during a Championship game against Sheffield United in November.
Following the clash with United's Chris Morgan which left Hume with life-threatening injuries, there were fears that the 25-year-old's career could be over.
"Iain's had another scan and has been advised to continue his training programme, but not play," manager Simon Davey told the club's official website.
"He'll re-assess things in pre-season and hopefully we'll have a £1.2million striker back with us for the start of the new campaign."
