Barnsley manager Simon Davey claimed he was proud of his players despite the Tykes being knocked out of the Carling Cup by Newcastle United.
The Championship side gave a good account of themselves in the 2-0 second round defeat at St James' Park on Wednesday, but were undone by second-half strikes from international duo Michael Owen and Obafemi Martins.
"We have lost the game so we are disappointed and we are out of the cup," said Davey.
"But the performance, I thought was fantastic. The players did the club proud.
"We had to make six changes from Saturday and it proves we have got a good squad now that can compete at Championship level."
