Barnsley captain Paul Reid sustained a broken nose in the 3-0 defeat at Bristol City.
Reid finished the game at Ashton Gate despite his injury and Tykes boss Andy Ritchie is hoping that surgery can wait until the end of the season.
He told the club's official website: "Paul bust his nose pretty badly and will probably need an operation to put things right, although it will wait until the end of the season.
"His nose is less like a motorway and more like a B road at the moment."
Ritchie is, however, looking for loan players to bolster his squad, adding: "We will be moving in the next couple of days and we have some people in mind, but we will have to see if we can get them to the club."
