Reds Turned Down Again

As Butcher says no

The search for a manager continues at Oakwell as Inverness manager Terry Butcher has become the next man to turn down the job.

The Reds opened talks with ex-England defender Butcher on Monday and were widely expected to name him as manager but he flew back to Inverness after concluding talks today and has made the decision to stay in Scotland.

This leaves the Reds still managerless going into the weekend's crunch Yorkshire derby with Leeds United, with no new signings on the horizon, it is a worrying time at Oakwell.

Butcher made a statement on the official Inverness website:

"I was pleased that Caley Thistle gave me the opportunity to talk to Barnsley, who were excellent to deal with. But I have decided that my future lies at Inverness," he said.

"We have been going extremely well to be second in the SPL, still in the Scottish Cup and with a League Cup semi-final to look forward to later this month,"

"I have also brought people to this club and, on reflection, feel that I should remain with them to try to continue the good work.

"My focus is now firmly on that."

So where does this leave Barnsley now? David Flitcroft is now favourite to land the job along with the previous suspects in Gary Megson, Micky Mellon, Paul Ince and Neil Redfearn.
