Robins pulls off major coup! Barnsley boss Mark Robins has pulled off a major coup in the loan market today by signing Birmingham City striker Garry O’Connor on a one month deal. The 27 year old who has hit four goals in 16 appearances for Scotland has joined on a short term deal to boost the Reds attacking options. O’Connor made his name in his native Scotland where he scored an impressive 46 goals in 138 games for Hibernian between 2000 and 2006. Those exploits earned him a move to Russia and Lokomotiv Moscow where he scored seven times in 33 games. He returned to Britain in June 2007 when Birmingham paid £2.7m for his services and despite only making nine starts in the 2007-2008 season, he managed to score four goals, including the equaliser in a 1-1 draw at Arsenal. Birmingham were relegated from the Premier League that year, but in the Championship, O’Connor again made the most of limited opportunities, scoring six times in just 12 starts, including in a 2-0 win over Barnsley in August. He started Birmingham’s first game of this campaign- a 2-2 draw at Sunderland but hasn’t appeared in the league since. O’Connor’s last match for Scotland was in a 3-1 win over Ukraine in October 2007, but he was included in the squad for the matches against Macedonia and Holland in September 2009.
