Match Preview Team News: Barnsley are forced into a defensive reshuffle for the first home league game of the new season. Stephen Foster suffered concussion during the 1-0 Carling Cup defeat to Rochdale so Bobby Hassell will replace him, and Kieran Trippier will make his second Reds league debut. Andy Gray is likely to replace Liam Dickinson upfront whilst new signings Jim O’Brien and Diego Arismendi could make the squad for the first time. The points were shared in both games last season with The Reds gaining a 1-1 draw at Selhurst Park in December courtesy of a fine finish from Daniel Bogdanovic, and the two sides played out a drab goal-less draw at Oakwell in March. That game was the second 0-0 draw in the last three meetings at Oakwell, with the other one coming in 2006-2007. Barnsley produced a fine performance to beat the Eagles 3-1 in March 2009, Jamal Campbell-Ryce, a Clint Hill own goal and Michael Mifsud earning three vital points against relegation. Palace are hunting their first win at Oakwell since 2002 when they thumped the Reds 4-1. They are unbeaten in the last six Selhurst Park meetings however, winning five of them. They had two managers, a spell in administration and managed to drop from the edge of the play-off race to the edge of the relegation zone in 24 hours. Under Neil Warnock the Eagles were soaring towards the top of the Championship as the season entered 2010 and despite a 2-0 defeat to Newcastle on the 27th January they sat ninth in the table, just four points off the play-offs. Within 24 hours though they had dropped to 21st, just a point above the drop zone. Years of over-spending and falling crowds finally caught up with Palace as they slipped into administration. He just managed it. The battle to avoid the final relegation place went down to the final day and ironically a match against the only other side who could go down- Sheffield Wednesday. A 2-2 draw at Hillsborough was enough to ensure the Eagles survival and meant it was the Owls wings which were clipped. Hart departed after this Houdini act with ex Scotland gaffer George Burley taking the reigns and he has made an impressive start to the new campaign, winning both matches, 3-2 in the league against Leicester and 1-0 at Yeovil in the Carling Cup. Barnsley sit bottom of the embryonic Championship after extending their 10 match winless run from the end of last season to 12 matches. The Reds were thumped 4-0 at QPR on the opening day of the season before going down 1-0 to League One Rochdale in the cup on Tuesday. The two sides met on this date back in 1999, again at Oakwell with the Eagles taking the spoils 3-2. Simon Roger put Palace in the lead but Darren Barnard restored parity before half time. Dean Austin put the Eagles back in front only for Mike Sheron to make it 2-2. Lee Bradbury won it however with 16 minutes remaining. Ironically this result also came after The Reds had lost in London on the opening day- 3-1 at Charlton. They recovered from those opening two defeats to reach the Play-Off Final where they lost 4-2 to Ipswich- managed by George Burley! Barnsley’s other defeat on this date came in 2004, again at home when they lost 4-3 to Luton. Michael Boulding had given the Reds a second minute lead, but goals from Steve Howard, Rowan Vine and Ahmet Brkovic gave the Hatters a 3-1 half time advantage. That became 4-1 in the 66th minute when Stephen Robinson scored. Stephen McPhail and Boulding make the score-line more respectable. Barnsley though have notched four victories on this date with the most recent being a 2-1 Carling Cup victory over Darlington in 2007, and the others being 4-3 v York in 1968, 4-2 v Walsall in 1971 and 2-1 v Lincoln in 1979. Crystal Palace have a very good record on the 14th August, having never lost on this date in seven matches. The Eagles have won three and drawn four with the aforementioned one of those victories coming at Oakwell. The others are 2-1 v Huddersfield in 1968 and 2-0 v Newcastle in 1971.
