Interesting Stats

Both these sides are in contrasting form and at opposite ends of the table. Southampton, aiming for a second successive promotion are top of the Championship and are unbeaten in their last eight league matches, winning four of them. Barnsley on the other hand have dropped to 17th in the table and have won just four of their last 16 games, losing 11 of them.

Nigel Adkins side have lost just seven matches in the Championship so far this season- the joint lowest, have scored 63 goals- the most in the division and have a plus 30 goal difference- the highest in the division.

The Saints have won 13 of their 18 matches at the St Mary’s Stadium – only League Two Swindon have won more home games in the Football League this season.

The South Coast outfit have also only conceded 13 goals in front of their own supporters this season- only Birmingham and Crystal Palace (10) have conceded less home goals.

Southampton are unbeaten in their last four home games but have won just two of their last six matches at home.

Barnsley have won just one of their last seven matches, losing five of them and they have lost their last four matches on the road, failing to score in the last three.

It is nearly six years since Barnsley last lost five successive away games. Back in October/November 2006 they lost eight in a row on the road.

Defeat for Barnsley tomorrow would be their 1,200 in English football’s second tier.

The Reds have won four matches on the road this season- more than they managed in the whole of 2010-2011

The two teams are evenly matched in head to head meetings, as they have both won 21 apiece and Barnsley are unbeaten in their last two trips to St Mary’s Stadium (W1 D1).

Southampton are though unbeaten in their last four encounters with Barnsley and have kept clean sheets in each of the last three.

Southampton won 1-0 at Oakwell back in August but have not achieved a league double over The Reds since the 1950-51 season.
