Interesting Stats
This will be Barnsley’s first visit to Brighton’s new Amex Stadium, which they moved into in the summer.
Sunday is the first meeting between the two sides in seven years and only the second in 20 years.
The Reds have won only three of their 16 visits to the South East, the last of which was way back in October 1988. The Seagulls have won each of the three meetings there since and are looking for their fifth victory in six matches against Barnsley.
Like Barnsley, Brighton are developing into the divisions draw specialists after they have endured five stalemates this season (compared to The Reds six).
The Reds drew five of their first nine matches- all in a row, but since then have not had a stalemate in the following six games.
Brighton have season their season turn around full circle. After storming to the League One title last season, the Seagulls won seven of their first eight league and cup matches in 2011-2012 and sat proudly at the top of the Championship. Since then though they have failed to win any of the following ten to drop down to 11th.
Brighton has a symmetrical league record having won five, drawn five and lost five of their 15 matches.
Barnsley have accrued 18 points from their first 15 games- their joint best return (along with 2008-2009) since gaining 20 from the same total of matches in 2007-2008.
Barnsley have had a pretty topsy-turvy week, having gone from losing to a team without a win in 11 (Bristol City), to beating a team undefeated in nine (Hull), and now they play a team winless in 10 (Brighton).
Barnsley are looking for back-to-back wins for first time in 12 months.
Brighton, who lost 1-0 at Watford on Tuesday night have suffered back-to-back defeats only once since April 2010 and that came at the end of September.
Brighton have scored just once in their last five games (after failing to score in just one of the previous 28 matches) and are goal-less in their last three matches. The last time they went four games without bagging a goal was March 2009.
Due to Saturday being Bonfire Night, the match between these two teams has bizarrely been moved to the following day. The last time the Seagulls played on a Sunday was the 15th November 2009 when they won 3-1 at Southampton. The Reds last game on this day was in March when they shared a 2-2 scoreline in Cardiff. Barnsley are winless in their last three Sunday matches since winning at Plymouth in the final game of the 2008-2009 season whilst Brighton have won their last two.
Sunday’s game will be Brighton’s 800th in the second tier of English football.
