Barnsley are now searching for their eighth manager in 10 years after David Flitcroft became the latest casualty of the unforgiving SkyBet Championship.
Just six months after leading The Reds to a last gasp survival at Huddersfield, Flitcroft has been axed following this afternoon’s 3-0 home defeat to Birmingham City, which left the side bottom of the table, six points adrift of safety.
The 39 year old had presided over Barnsley’s worst start to a season in 40 years after winning just two of the first 17 games of the season.
Flitcroft was appointed the club’s permanent manager on Monday 14th January 2013, following a 2-0 victory over Leeds, meaning he was in full time charge for just 10 months, giving him the shortest reign as Reds boss since Gudjon Thordarson lasted just 10 months between June 2003 and March 2004.
A club statement read:
“Barnsley Football Club can confirm First Team Manager David Flitcroft has been relieved of his position at the Football Club.
Technical Coach Martin Scott and Strength and Conditioning Coach Guy Proctor have also parted company with the Club. Assistant Manager Micky Mellon has been placed in caretaker charge of first team affairs, assisted by Development Coach Paul Heckingbottom in the meantime. There will be no further statements from the Club until Wednesday 4th December 2013. The Club would like to place on record their appreciation and thanks for what David, Martin and Guy have achieved.” There have been strong rumours that former Manchester United coach Mike Phelan is being lined up as the new manager due to his strong links with Barnsley chairman, and former United director Maurice Watkins.
