Cranie Joins Reds

While new deal is just a Stones throw away

Barnsley have completed the signing of defender Martin Cranie on a one-year-deal.

The 25-year-old left Coventry at the end of his contract after they were relegated from the Championship. He has spent much of the summer training with Leeds United.

He will go straight into Keith Hill's squad to play Wolverhampton Wanderers at Molineux tomorrow night.

Cranie plays primarily as a centre-back but can play anywhere across the back four, which Hill states as an important reason for the signing. He told BBC Radio Sheffield:

"He's an exceptional player and he'll come in to the squad and add some real versatility. I think he's an excellent signing."

The new Reds capture spoke to www.barnsleyfc.co.uk:

"I'm delighted to have signed for Barnsley. It's taken up to the start of the season to get it done, but I'm glad I am here now. The gaffer has shown a lot of faith in me and when I came in to have a look around he had a lot of good things to say. "I've been at Leeds training during preseason so I am fit and raring to go. "Tomorrow night's game at Wolves will be a tough one, but the lads are all positive. On the Saturday they played very well and they deserved to win which is a great positive to take into Tuesday's game."

Meanwhile, Hill has revealed that promising defender John Stones will be offered a three-year-deal at Oakwell. Stones has shone so far this season, even scoring his first senior goal in the 4-3 win at Rochdale.
