Barnsley youngster Michael Coulson may not play again this year after suffering cruciate ligament damage in a freak training ground accident.
The 20-year-old has been a regular in the Tykes squad since the turn of the year but could now be sidelined for eight months.
Boss Simon Davey told the club's official website: "It's devastating for everybody here. There was nothing in it and no-one really near him.
"Michael just went over and caught his stud in the turf. It's another freak accident and we seem to have had a lot of them this season.
"It could be between six and eight months for Michael and that's very hard to take."
