Colombian Keeper Set To Arrive

Reds turn to Gonzalez as Nash deal falters.

Barnsley are set to turn to former Manchester City and Brighton goalkeeper David Gonzalez to solve their keeper crisis after a deal to bring in Carlo Nash on loan from Stoke City fell through.

Reds boss Keith Hill had hoped to bring in 38 year old Nash on a short term deal to cover for the injured Luke Steele and suspended Ben Alnwick but both Barnsley and Stoke could not agree the terms of the loan.

This has led Hill to turn to former Colombia international stopper Gonzalez- or David Gonzalez Giraldo to give him his full name. The 30 year old made his name in his native Colombia with Independiente Medellín and Deportivo Cali before moving to Turkey where he played for Çaykur Rizespor.

His performances earned the two cap stopper a trial with Manchester City in 2009 where he impressed and signed permanently in January 2010. He was not named in their 25 man squad for the 2010-2011 season but became first choice for City’s reserve side and a series of top notch performances saw him attract the interest of a host of Championship sides. He eventually joined Leeds United on loan on transfer deadline day in January 2011. He returned to City after two appearances at Elland Road and joined Scottish Premier League side Aberdeen on loan at the start of the 2011-2012 season and made 14 appearances for them.

In January of this year Gonzalez saw his contract at Manchester City cancelled by mutual consent and he penned a short term deal with Brighton in April making three appearances. One of those was in the 0-0 draw at Oakwell on the final day of last season, which means, ironically his last appearance for any club was against Barnsley.

Initially Gonzalez is to join The Reds on a non-contract basis, and if he impresses in the games against Middlesbrough, Wolves and his former side Brighton, he could be offered a longer term deal.
