Carling Cup First Round: Barnsley v Rochdale

Match Preview Jim O’Brien could be set for his debut in Barnsley’s first venture into this season’s Carling Cup. The Scottish winger has missed the last fortnight with a thigh strain but has resumed light training. Jeronimo Neumann is a doubt however after hurting his groin in training whilst loanee Diego Arismendi is still unavailable. Team News Likely Lineup: Luke Steele/David Preece Jay McEveley Jason Shackell Stephen Foster Bobby Hassell Adam Hammill Nathan Doyle Jacob Butterfield Martin Devaney Goran Lovre Andy Gray/Iain Hume Head To Head Tonight’s game is Barnsley’s first meeting with Rochdale since this stage of the League Cup 14 years ago- the year Barnsley won promotion to the Premier League. Back then the early stages of the competition were two legged affairs. The Reds were defeated 2-1 in the first leg at Spotland. Paul Wilkinson gave The Reds a half time lead but the Dale came back in the second half with strikes from John Deary and Steve Whitehall. Barnsley would progress however after winning the return game 2-0 at Oakwell two weeks later, Neil Redfearn and Wilkinson steering them through. Incidentally that 2-1 reverse at Rochdale was the only game in the first seven of that season Barnsley failed to win! Barnsley won exit the League Cup in the second round- drawing 1-1 at home to Gillingham before losing the away leg 1-0. The 1978-79 season was the last time both Barnsley and Rochdale were in the same division- the Fourth Division, and Rochdale had incredibly remained there up until this May when they finally gained promotion. That season, both teams won the away fixture 3-0, with Rochdale’s success at Oakwell, the one and only time they have come away victorious from this part of South Yorkshire. Best Season: Runners-Up 1961-62 Last Season: 2009-2010 saw Rochdale end 36 long painful years in the bottom tier of English football as they gained promotion to League One, finishing in third place and gaining automatic promotion. They had come agonisingly close the previous season when they lost to Gillingham in the play-offs but this time they didn’t need the end of season lottery. At one point it looked like Keith Hill’s side were going to run away with the division and they were ten points clear at the top at the end of March, before suffering a shocking run, winning just one of their final nine games- losing seven, including the final four. This saw Notts County and Bournemouth leapfrog them, but due to the top three’s superiority over the rest of the league for most of the season, they still finished nine points clear of the play-off pack. Their current form is dire though and despite gaining a 0-0 draw with Hartlepool in their first third division game since the 27th April 1974, they have won just one of their last 10 matches and none of the last five. Barnsley’s recent form is even worse with The Reds winless in their last 11 matches and with just one win in the last 14, culminating in starting this season with a 4-0 hammering at QPR- their heaviest opening day defeat since a 4-0 battering at Bradford in 2001. Their other victory was a 4-2 success at Lincoln in the League Cup in 1999, Neil Shipperley, Robin Van Der Laan (2) and Nicky Eaden netting for The Reds.
