Carling Cup First Round:Barnsley v Morecambe

08 August 2011 05:48
Match Preview Team News: Barnsley suffered no injury problems during the opening day draw with Nottingham Forest so Keith Hill has the luxury of a full squad to choose from and he has hinted at given a few of his substitutes on Saturday a start tomorrow night. This could see Bobby Hassell, Jim McNulty and Matty Done drafted into the side. David Preece may also be preferred to Luke Steele in goal- if so it would be the 34 year old’s first competitive appearance since March 2010. Likely Lineup: David Preece Jim McNulty Bobby Hassell Stephen Foster Scott Wiseman Matty Done Nathan Doyle David Perkins Miles Addison Danny Haynes Craig Davies/ Ricardo Vaz Te Head To Head: Never Met Last Season And This: Last six 2010-2011/ 2011-2012 results: Barnsley: 6/8/11 NottinghamForest 0-0 Barnsley 7/5/11 Barnsley 1-0 Millwall (Championship) 30/4/11 SheffieldUnited 2-2 Barnsley(Championship) 25/4/11 Barnsley 2–2 Doncaster (Championship) 23/4/11 Watford 1-0 Barnsley (Championship) 16/4/11 Middlesbrough 1-1Barnsley (Championship) W: 1 D: 4 L: 1 F: 6 A: 6 GD: 0 Points: 5 Morecambe: 6/8/11 Morecambe 0–1 Barnet (League Two) 7/5/11 Morecambe 1-2 Northampton (League Two) 30/4/11 Port Vale 7-2 Morecambe (League Two) 25/4/11 Morecambe 1-1 Hereford (League Two) 22/4/11 Crewe 2-1 Morecambe (League Two) 16/4/11Gillingham1-1 Morecambe (League Two) W:0 D: 2 L: 4 F: 6 A: 14 GD: -7 Points: 2 Interesting Stats: This will be the first time the clubs have ever met.Barnsley have always been at least two divisions above Morecambe and they have never duelled in cup competition before. Reds boss Keith Hill does have previous with the Shrimps however as he finished his playing career with them, making 20 appearances in the 2002-2003 season, helping them to second in the Conference, but he did not appear in their play-off semi-final defeat to Dagenham & Redbridge. A certain David Perkins did however, and The Reds summer signing from Colchester started his career at Morecambe’s old Christie Park stadium, making 176 appearances in seven years between 2000-2007. He missed out on the Shrimps promotion to the Football League in 2006-2007 as he moved to Rochdale in the January. His last appearance for Morecambe saw him sent off in a 2-1 win at Southport on Boxing Day 2006. Both Hill and Perkins played with current Morecambe boss Jim Bentley whilst at the club. Like Hill, Bentley is in his formative managerial days at a new club. The 35 year old who has made nearly 300 appearances for Morecambe from 2002, was appointed player-coach in June 2010 and then stepped into the hot seat this summer as player-manager, replacing Sammy McIlroy, who saw his six year spell at the Globe Arena end by mutual consent after a 20th place League Two finish. Morecambe started the 2011-2012 season with a 1-0 home defeat to Barnet, which means the club are without a win in six matches and have lost their last three matches. Tomorrow’s tie will only be the eighth League Cup match Morecambe have played and they have won three and lost four of the previous seven. Their best ever run in the cup was the Third Round in 2007-2008 (their first season in the competition) when they superbly knocked out Championship sides Preston and Wolves on their own patches before succumbing to a 5-0 hammering at Sheffield United. Barnsley have been knocked out of the League Cup by lower league sides three times in the last five seasons, and it was Keith Hill’s Rochdale who triumphed 1-0 at Oakwell in the First Round last August. They have also kept just one clean sheet in their last 13 League Cup ties, and despite this being the Reds fourth successive home tie in the competition they have failed to score in the last two- 2-0 defeat to Manchester United, 1-0 defeat to Rochdale.
