Interesting Stats:

This is the second time in three seasons that the two sides have met in the First Round of the League Cup. Back in 2010, a Rochdale side, managed by current Reds boss Keith Hill, triumphed 1-0 at Oakwell.

The Reds have exited the competition to lower league sides in the first round in each of the last two seasons and three of the last four- Morecambe 2011, Rochdale 2010 and Crewe 2008.

They are also searching for their first League Cup goal since September 2009.

Barnsley have failed to win on the opening day of the season for six years.

Neither team are carrying any positive form over from the end of 2011-2012. Barnsley failed to win any of their final seven matches, and just one of 15, whilst Rochdale, who were relegated in their first full season without Hill ended with just one victory in nine as they finished bottom of League One.

Rochdale have only progressed beyond the second round on two occasions- their first excursion when they reached the third round in 1960-61, and then, remarkably, the following season when they went all the way to the Final, where they lost to Norwich City over two legs.

As well as 2010, Barnsley and Rochdale have met once before in the first round. In the 1996-1997 season, The Reds were defeated 2-1 at Spotland, but in a two legged affair, won 2-0 at Oakwell to progress 3-2 on aggregate.
