Midfield starlet Jacob Butterfield has been offered a new two-and-a-half-year deal at the Club following his fine start to the season.
The 21-year-old has scored four goals so far in a glittering campaign which has seen him become Barnsley's youngest ever captain. He has also attracted interest from the Premier League due to his fine start.
He told the Sheffield Star:
“It’s still very early days, I’ve got to make a big decision on my future,”
“I’ve worked hard in my career and hard to get where I am now, so I’ve got a lot of things to consider for my future.
“I’m happy where I am at the minute. I owe a lot to Barnsley for the chance they’ve given me because when I was 15 I was really close to quitting football.
“I’d just left Manchester United and had trials at Blackburn Rovers and Fulham, but they never came to anything.
“I’d get the same response from most places I went: that I was technically brilliant but a little too small and underdeveloped. It was very frustrating.
“Barnsley was a last resort and thankfully they gave me the chance. Simon Davey had just become manager and [youth team boss] Ronnie Branston were keen to let me show what I could do.
“And now under Keith and Flicker [David Flitcroft] I’m getting the games that I’ve always wanted, which has been great.
“They’ve given me the responsibility of being captain and I’ve been repaying them with my performances.”
“I’m really enjoying my opportunities, I can’t thank the gaffer and Flicker enough, he added.
“Our relationship has developed from pre-season. It took time to get going, but we’ve got a good relationship.
“It’s great to have been offered a new deal, but I’m not in any rush to make a decision because this is a very big point in my career.
Meanwhile, manager Keith Hill has ruled out a loan move for Leeds United cast off Billy Paynter. the 27-year-old was signed from Swindon, where he built a fine partnership with now Burnley striker Charlie Austin.
Hill said:
“We’re definitely not interested in him [Paynter]. We don’t need to be interested in him because we’ve got great permutations at our disposal.”
The Reds boss also said a loan move for Luke Potter to Blue Square Premier side Alfreton Town had broken down, but still "might happen".
