Tykes mull over Mellis availability

Barnsley are still sweating on the fitness of Jacob Mellis for the televised visit of Sheffield Wednesday.

The midfielder missed last week's 2-2 draw at Leicester with a dead leg and he has yet to return to full training as boss Keith Hill tried to protect the injury.

That is the only injury concern for Hill, though, as he leads his side into the South Yorkshire derby aiming for the club's first win in 11 games.

David Perkins is back in contention after returning from a hamstring injury in a substitute role at Leicester last weekend, though experienced striker Mido is poised to leave Oakwell in the next few days.

John Stones returned to the side at the King Power Stadium, allowing Martin Cranie to move into the middle of defence, with Jim McNulty dropping out of the side.

And Hill will assess his opposition before deciding what combination to go with at the back.

The Owls arrive at Oakwell in similarly poor form, having lost their last seven games.

Sheffield Wednesday will monitor several players.

Winger Jermaine Johnson limped out of last weekend's 3-2 defeat to Bristol City with a hamstring injury and he will be assessed along with Jay Bothroyd, who is nursing an ankle injury which kept him out.

Mamady Sidibe and Anthony Gardner were also absent from the damaging loss at Hillsborough as they failed fitness tests on their hamstring injuries and they will again be checked on before kick-off.

Danny Mayor should be the one to come into the team if Johnson does not make it at Oakwell, but Dave Jones will be desperate for his winger to be fit after an impressive display last week.

Jones takes his side 13 miles up the M1 feeling the pressure as his side have lost their last seven games and are entrenched in the bottom three, leading to a section of Wednesday fans calling for the manager's head.
