Rudderless Reds find their way

Managerless Barnsley claimed all three points as they beat Crewe 2-0 following goals from Lewin Nyatanga and Paul Rachubka's own goal.

It took until the 20th minute for the game to produce anything of interest as Crewe forward Marcus Haber was brought down in the area, only for the referee to wave away the claims for a penalty.

The best chance of the first half fell to Barnsley when Leory Lita pulled the ball across to give Kane Hemmings the chance to stick out a foot and put the ball into an empty net from two yards out, but the striker stood rooted to the spot and watched the ball, and the chance, sail by.

The breakthrough finally came when a free-kick from Josh Scowen found Nyatanga in the 66th minute and the latter headed in from close range to give Barnsley the lead.

In the 79th minute, a routine corner was headed high into the air and the attempt to catch it by Rachubka sent the ball into the back of the substitute goalkeeper's own net, securing a much-needed win for the hosts.
