McLeod punishes 10-man Barnsley

Izale McLeod headed Crawley's winner on his debut to clinch his side a 1-0 win at 10-man Barnsley.

The striker, a summer signing from MK Dons, rose unchallenged to nod home Conor Henderson's corner with nine minutes remaining after Barnsley winger Dale Jennings had earlier been sent off at Oakwell.

Crawley fielded eight debutants from the start but it was experienced captain Josh Simpson who almost gave them a lead when his right-footed strike hit the outside of the right-hand post in the 37th minute.

Jennings had Barnsley's only notable first-half effort, forcing a flying save from Crawley goalkeeper Brian Jensen with a powerful drive from the left corner of the 18-yard box.

Striker Sam Winnall should have put Barnsley ahead five minutes into the second period but he shot straight at Jensen from 12 yards.

Jennings, also sent off in the opening game of last season, was then dismissed for retaliating to a foul by Town midfielder Gwion Edwards before McLeod secured the three points for the visitors.
