Barnsley boss Simon Davey has put club captain Paul Reid on the transfer list, a statement released on the club's website revealed.
The captaincy has been handed to striker Brian Howard as a consequence.
Also available for transfer is 33-year-old former West Brom star Andy Johnson.
Davey told the Sheffield Star: "They are both at an age when they need to be playing games. It's not good for them being sat in the stands."
They join goalkeeper Nick Colgan on the transfer list.
Meanwhile, midfielder Grant McCann's proposed move to Scunthorpe United is off after the Iron's bid, thought to be in the region of £100,000, didn't match the Tykes' evaluation of the player.
Davey has also not given up on extending the loan deals for Lewin Nyatanga, Anderson De Silva and Jon Macken.
