A Look At The Weekend Action

18 August 2012 21:50
Reds win season opener for the first time in seven years with commanding performance….

….. The 1-0 win over Middlesbrough was the first time The Reds have collected three points from the first league game of the season since 2005 when they defeated Swindon Town in League One. Indeed it is only the fourth time they have managed it this century. It means Keith Hill is unbeaten on the opening day of the season since 2007 with both Rochdale and Barnsley and has kept clean sheets on four out of five of them, including the last three. Obviously this means Barnsley have kept clean sheets on the opening day of the last two campaigns, after the goal-less draw at Nottingham Forest 12 months ago. Before this you have to go all the way back to the opening day of the 1983-1984 season for the last time Barnsley had not conceded in the first game.

On a more recent note, today’s victory was Barnsley’s first in front of their own supporters since March and only their second in 15 league matches.
