Barnsley got back to winning ways after four matches without victory and manager David Flitcroft can boast a record of six wins from his 11 league games in charge with just three defeats.
It was the Reds first victory over Brighton in ten years- a total of five meetings ago and tied the head to head league meetings up at 13 wins apiece.
Jason Scotland was granted his first start for the club and popped up with his fifth goal.
Chris Dagnall's winner was his tenth of the campaign and his eighth in his last 13 appearances. It makes him the top scorer for the season ahead of the departed Craig Davies.
This result also extends Barnsley's scoring run in the league to 14 successive matches and they have notched at least two in seven of their last eight Championship games.
