Torquay 1-1 Barnet: Report

14 November 2010 12:11
Gulls march held by Barnet Torquay's three-match winning run was ended by a battling Barnet side who claimed a 1-1 draw at Plainmoor. Gulls central defender Mark Ellis made a crucial opening challenge to deny Barnet striker Steve Kabba a goalscoring opportunity. And the importance of Ellis' second-minute tackle on Kabba was realised in the 11th minute as a brilliant four-man move resulted in top scorer Elliot Benyon breaking the deadlock for Torquay. Billy Kee and recalled winger Danny Stevens - starting in place of Romone Rose - combined to set up recalled playmaker Eunan O'Kane on the left-hand side of the visitors' penalty area. The Northern Ireland Under-21 international let fly with a measured shot that had the beating of Bees number one Jake Cole and was on its way in when Benyon slid in to help the ball over the line for his ninth goal of the season. Keeper Cole had more joy in stopping O'Kane's diving header from Stevens' left-wing cross a few minutes later. And his save also proved crucial soon after as Barnet drew level in the 20th minute. Chris Robertson did well to dispossess livewire left winger Mark Marshall, who shielded the ball out for a corner. And from Marshall's set-piece, unmarked central midfielder Mark Byrne swept in at the near post to glance home the leveller. Keeper Scott Bevan made a brilliant second-half block to stop Byrne claiming all three points for Barnet.
