Matt Paterson netted twice as 10-man Southend cruised into the Johnstone's Paint Trophy area quarter-finals after with a 3-1 victory in an ill-tempered game with Barnet.

Paterson broke the deadlock after 23 minutes before netting a second after the break - moments after the Shrimpers had been reduced to ten men when Bilel Mohsni saw red.

Mauro Vilhete pulled one back for the Bees but the ten men secured their progression when Louie Soares fired home late on.

The visitors burst out of the blocks and were rewarded for their early dominance when Paterson slotted home Harry Crawford's cross from close range, but Barnet were given a lifeline after Mohsni was sent off for his part in a mass melee after bringing down Vilhete on the edge of his own box. But confusion in the Barnet defence soon after allowed Paterson to slot home, before Barnet pulled one back courtesy of Vilhete's 79th-minute header. Hopes of a comeback was short-lived, though, as Soares sealed the victory six minutes later with a deflected left-foot shot past keeper Jake Cole.
