Ten-man Newport sunk by John Akinde brace for Barnet

John Akinde's double helped Barnet put further space between them and the League Two relegation zone after beating 10-man Newport County 2-0.

Barnet's top scorer opened the scoring from the spot in the 54th minute after Medy Elito was shown a red card for his challenge on Bees skipper Andy Yiadom.

Akinde then confirmed the points in the 89th minute to take his tally to three goals in two matches.

The County defence had plenty to deal with early on as the hosts bombarded the penalty area with a series of corner kicks and Joe Day saved from Luke Gambin and Aaron McLean.

Elito almost broke the deadlock with a stunning curled effort from the left wing that sailed inches wide, before the game opened up after the break.

First Elito was deemed to have denied Yiadom a goalscoring opportunity and Akinde held his nerve to send Day the wrong way.

With time almost up, the Barnet striker capitalised on a mix-up between Day and Janoi Donacien to tap the ball into an empty net.
