Thompson double stings Bees

Garry Thompson's first Wycombe goals earned his new side a 2-0 win over Barnet in the first Football League game at The Hive.

The forward, a summer signing from Notts County, lashed home early in the second half before bagging an injury-time penalty to ruin the Bees' first Sky Bet League Two game since leaving Underhill in 2013.

Barnet striker John Akinde had the game's first chance but lifted his sixth-minute shot narrowly wide after racing clear from Bondz N'Gala's ball forward before Wycombe winger Michael Harriman fired woefully over when well placed at the other end.

Winger Luke Gambin went close to putting the hosts ahead on the stroke of half-time when his powerful drive flashed wide of Matthew Ingram's goal.

Thompson found the top left-hand corner of the net with a powerful left-foot strike from 20 yards to open the scoring in the 53rd minute.

Barnet substitute Michael Gash was denied an acrobatic equaliser when his 84th-minute overhead kick was parried by Ingram before Thompson was fouled in the penalty area and picked himself up to roll the ball into the bottom right-hand corner of the net in the sixth minute of injury time.
