Scott Boden goal sees Newport book FA Cup third-round spot

Scott Boden scored the winner as Newport reached the FA Cup third round for the first time in 30 years with a 1-0 win at Barnet.

The forward superbly headed home off the left upright from Andrew Hughes' left-wing cross with an hour played at The Hive.

Chances were at a premium in a goalless first half but County had the better of the play and could have gone ahead on a couple of occasions.

Exiles winger Alex Rodman broke into the box in the 19th minute only to see his effort blocked by Bees goalkeeper Jamie Stephens, while striker Lenell John-Lewis blasted over from close range after the ball broke loose just before the break.

Barnet striker John Akinde saw his low shot repelled by the legs of visiting keeper Joe Day five minutes after the restart before Boden grabbed the decisive goal.

Bees defender Bira Dembele went close to an equaliser when his towering header from a corner was cleared off the line by Medy Elito but the hosts could not find a way back into the tie.
