Valdes given hope of Spain call

Barcelona goalkeeper Victor Valdes has been given hope by national team head coach Vicente Del Bosque that he could yet earn a place in Spain's squad for the World Cup finals.

The 28-year-old has yet to win a senior cap for his country, with Real Madrid's Iker Casillas and Liverpool's Jose Reina standing in his way, but Del Bosque is well aware of Valdes' qualities.

He told Veo Marca: "The doors to the national team are not closed to any player.

"Valdes has been in great form and I know that he helped Barcelona to win all those trophies last season.

"There is strong competition and, at the moment, I have not found the need to call him up because we have great keepers.

"But he needs to keep working hard and continue to play well, because nobody has yet been excluded."
