This video might just change your opinion of Luis Suarez

Former Liverpool footballer Luis Suarez gets a bad rap in England. Sure, last year he was voted the Premier League’s player of the year by his fellow professionals, before moving to Barcelona, but the public have never really taken to him.

On the pitch he can do things not many others can, and despite his flaws you can never accuse the Uruguayan of not trying. He hasn’t helped his cause by biting Branislav Ivanovic and Giorgio Chiellini, or his antics against Ghana, but despite that he is just another human being with an interesting story.

Having the name that he does and occupying the place he does in world football, Suarez has many admirers – none more than Mateo, a young cancer patient from Uruguay.

It’s difficult to imagine anyone having a more heart-warming trip to the hospital than that. Mateo believed he was going to the hospital to speak to a doctor in Spain, but he could tell something different was happening when the “doctor” asked if he’d ever celebrated one of his goals.

It doesn’t discard the wrongs Suarez has made in the past, but it does show one important thing – no one is as one dimensional as they may come across as on the TV.

Mateo is a patient at the Dr Pérez Scremini Foundation, which helps children suffering with cancer. You can donate to them here.
