Thigh injury sidelines Puyol

Barcelona defender Carles Puyol will be out of action for up to three weeks with a thigh muscle injury.

Puyol pulled out of Sunday's season-opening 3-0 victory over Racing Santander after picking up an injury during the pre-match warm-up.

He has now been told to rest the thigh problem for the next few weeks and will therefore miss Spain's upcoming matches against Liechtenstein and Argentina.

"Tests carried out at the Camp Nou confirmed that Puyol has injured his soleus muscle just below the left calf," confirmed a club statement.

"He'll require treatment and is doubtful for the next few matches."

Puyol is now likely to miss Barca's La Liga matches against Hercules, Atletico Madrid and Sporting Gijon as well as their opening Champions League group stage encounter with Panathinaikos.
