Lionel Messi admitted he was surprised to be told he had scored Barcelona's 5,000th goal during Sunday's 2-1 victory at Racing Santander.

The Argentina star scored twice after coming on as a second-half substitute at El Sardinero, but was oblivious to the fact that his strikes had nudged the Catalan club to the landmark.

The come-from-behind victory also preserved Barca's 12-point lead at the top of the table.

"I did not realise that I had scored Barca's 5,000th league goal. I was only informed of it after the match," he said.

"When you're on the field, you do not think about such things. You only think about winning. But still, I'm very happy to be part of the club's history.

"The important thing is that we won another three points.

"It was a very difficult ground to play in and the pressure was on us after Madrid won on Saturday (against Numancia)."
