Mesmerising Messi closes in on Gerd Muller

Lionel Messi never ceases to amaze the footballing world with his sublime talent and skill and has wowed us all again by scoring 76 goals this calender year to eclipse legend Pele who could 'only' manage 75.

The question now is can the little Argentinian go one step further and beat the footballing great Gerd Muller's record of 85 goals in 12 months. Not many would bet against it when the Barcelona icon has already netted 64 goals for his club this year, 15 coming in just 11 matches so far this season in La Liga and then add on the other 12 he has for his national team.

The three time FIFA Ballon d'Or winner was of course on target again for Barcelona this weekend, scoring his sides second and fourth goals against a gritty and determined Mallorca, to keep his team top of the league table with 31 points.

Tito Vilanova, Barcelona's head coach has heaped the praise on his star man, paying tribute to his goalscoring prowess.

“Leo continually breaks records. His goal tally is spectacular," Vilanova said.

“It takes other great players seven or eight seasons to score the amount of goals he scores in one season. Also, some of his goals are really great goals.”

The 25-year-old has made 328 appearances for Barcelona and has already amassed 270 goals for the club, making him the clubs record goalscorer and with 9 games to go to beat Muller's incredible record I'm sure we'll all be writing about this little magician again very soon.
